Take time for yourself.

The holidays and moving into a new year can be a wonderfully beautiful time, but it can also be a stressful and exhausting time.

The past month and year can just seem like a blur. You’ve spent so much time, planning, shopping, wrapping, traveling, hosting, smiling & eating god knows what. :D You’ve got 1 week between Christmas and New Years to hurry up and figure out those resolutions, goals and intentions for the coming year, but you are still putting all of your Christmas decorations away and cleaning up after your relatives and you have to go back to work. aaahhh!

Here are a few simple idea’s to help keep you energized, and stay warm and inspired as we move into the heart of winter.

  1. Drink more water – It’s usually pretty obvious in the summer when you are sweating your ass off to drink more water, but when it gets cold, it can be easy to forget. It is a good idea all the time. In the winter try hot water your favorite citrus and honey.
  2. Try a new tea – I’m not a huge tea drinker, but I do sometimes like a little sleepy time before bed. The other day, I bought Yogi’s Egyptian Licorice. Yummy.
  3. Clean out a drawer – I know you have at least one drawer that’s bugging you! Maybe in your bathroom or your underwear or sock drawer? Clean it out. Organize it. Make it nice.
  4. Write a love letter – Pick 1-3 friends and send them a love note via pony express.  Tell them how much they mean to you and why you love them.
  5. Chop off your hair –Summertime seems like a more logical time to chop off your locks, but how bout now? I just did it and it feels great! They tell me it looks very “uptown”. :D
  6. Get a mani-pedi– Well, yes, I do still get to wear flip-flops a lot in the winter (and I have to say it’s pretty awesome) but even if you are wearing sneakers or combat boots give your feet a treat and get a deluxe mani-pedi. The one where they rub seaweed all over your legs! Even if your feet are in shoes all day, just looking down at happy feet in the shower makes ya smile.
  7. Get a massage – First make your favorite soup, maybe do a little cleaning so everything is nice and tidy when you come home. Go get an HOUR and a HALF massage, come home, take a hot bath, eat some soup and then go to bed early.
  8.  Meditate – If you’ve never meditated before, give it a whirl. It’s pretty awesome once you get used to it. Start by sitting in a comfortable chair however you like. Sit back, relax, be comfortable. Make sure your head is free tho, you don’t want to be so comfortable that you fall asleep. Close your eyes, take a deep breath in thru the nose and exhale out the mouth. Do that two more times. Then just sit and breath, bringing your attention to your breath. Your thoughts will wonder and that is totally fine. Do not try and stop your thinking. It is nature. Notice your thoughts and then bring your attention back to your breath, notice your thoughts and when you notice yourself noticing your thoughts bring your attention back to you breath and continue like that. And that’s it. I recommend 20 minutes twice a day. Whaat!? But you can start with 1-5 minutes and build it up.
  9. Reflect and dream – Sit down with a friend or your partner, or all by your beautiful self and reflect on the previous year. Think about your very favorite moments or memories, some wonderful accomplishments big or small and then talk about or write down your dreams for the up and coming year. Then listen to theirs.
  10. Make a play list of your upcoming year. What is your year going to be about? Triumph, love, inspiration, health, spirituality, career, personal development, serenity, action, slowing down, traveling, presence, celebration, joy, creativity? Give yourself a word or two or three words. Or pick a theme for the upcoming year and then make a play list around it and listen to it every morning. Until, of course, you get sick of it and then change it!
